Some Interesting Facts About Dilip Kumar

Who does not know the actor Dilip Kumar in Hindi cinema? He was a shining star of Bollywood. Today’s young generation considers him as their role model.  He has been honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Bollywood’s highest award.

Personal details

He was born on 12 December 1922 in Peshawar, which is today in Pakistan. His name at birth was Mohammad Yusuf Khan.  His father’s name was Lala Ghulam Sarwar and his mother’s name was Ayesha Begum. Dilip’s father shifted from Peshawar to Mumbai. Coming to Mumbai, he started working in films. After coming here, Yusuf was named Dilip Kumar so that he would get fame in films. . Dilip Kumar had become friends with Raj Kapoor in his childhood. And when they grew up, both of them worked in the film industry.  In 1966, Dilip Kumar married an actress Saira Banu who was then 22 years old.

Facts related to career of Dilip Kumar

Dilip Kumar started his film career with ‘Jwar Bhata‘ which was released in 1944. Dilip was in the role of Jagdish in this film. After this, he worked in many films and did dozens of blockbuster films, which the audience liked a lot.  He was called The Tragedy King because of his work in sad films like Daag, Devdas, Azad, Mughle Azam, and Naya Daur.  It is believed that the effect of working in sad films started falling in his personal life. And for this reason, he was advised to work in some different films.  After this, he acted in the 1961 film ‘Kohinoor’. In this film, he was seen doing sword fighting and dancing.

Love story

The love story of Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar has been quite famous. Saira started liking Dilip from the age of 20. But at that time Dilip Kumar was in love with someone else. Although they knew that Saira loves him unconditionally.

At that time the discussions of Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s love were all around. They both loved each other very much. But their relationship broke down because of Madhubala’s father. The shooting of the film ‘Naya Daur’ was going on. The film was mostly completed, only a few portions had to be shot in Bhopal. But Madhubala’s father did not let her go and due to this, the work of the film came to a halt. BR Chopra suffered a lot due to the interruption of the film and filed a case in the High Court. There Dilip Kumar was to testify.  Here Dilip Kumar supported the truth and spoke in favor of BR Chopra. After this, there was a rift in the relationship between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala.

On 23 August 1966, there was a party at Saira’s house, to which Dilip Kumar was also invited. That day she wore a sari in which she looked very beautiful.  After the party was over, the next day Dilip called up Saira and praised the food being prepared at the party.  And after that, the conversation and meeting of both of them started. Then love and love turned into marriage.

Facts related to Parental Life

Dilip Kumar has revealed many things in his autobiography ‘The Substance and the Shadow’. In which the reason for not becoming a father in his life has also been told.  According to him, in 1972, Saira became pregnant for the first time. After 8 months, he complained of blood pressure.  During this time, it was impossible to perform surgery to save the fully developed fetus and the child died of suffocation. After this incident, Saira could never get pregnant and Dilip and Saira could never become parents.

In an interview, Saira was told about Dilip and Shahrukh’s first meeting. When he went to the  Auspicious beginning of ‘Dil Aashiana hai’ he clapped there formally. Saira has always said that if we had a son, he would have looked like Shah Rukh.

Dilip Kumar was also very fond of cricket. Whenever he got free time for shooting, he used to play cricket. At that time, he used to share pictures with her as well.

Member of Rajya sabha

He has been a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament in 2000.

Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri wrote about Dilip Kumar in his book ‘Neither a Hawk nor a Dove’ that one day when he was with Nawaz Sharif, a call came during this time. It was said that India’s PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee wants to talk to Nawaz Sharif. On the phone, Vajpayee had said – ‘We had brought the message of friendship to Lahore. But you gave us Kargil war in return’. After saying this, Vajpayee got Nawaz Sharif to talk to Dilip Kumar on the phone. Dilip Kumar expressed displeasure with Nawaz Sharif and said- ‘Mian sir, you have always been a big advocate of peace between the two countries, we did not expect this from you Indian Muslims become very insecure in times of stress. So do something to handle these situations. According to him, Nawaz Sharif was once terrified after hearing Dilip Kumar’s voice.

In this way, Dilip Kumar was a great personality who never made any difference between Hindu and Muslim. He always considered religion as one. When ‘Mughal Azam’ was released, he had said on the color version of that film that-‘ The color of the cinema may change. But, its effect is such that it compels people of every religion to cry shoulder to shoulder and laugh together in a closed room for three hours.’

Awards

Dilip Kumar has won the Filmfare Award 10 times for the best actor. Apart from this, he has also received three National Awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 1994, Certificate of Merit for Second Best Feature Film (gunga Jamna) in 1961 and Special Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Also he was awarded IIFA Award For Outstanding Contribution To Indian cinema.

Tribute

Being 98 years old, he was running ill for a long time. And today on July 7, 2021, he died tragically in a hospital in Mumbai.  The entire Bollywood industry is in shock due to his death. PM Narendra Modi called Saira Bano and assured her.
