Dr. Har Gobind Khorana Biography
Har Gobind Khorana was born on January 9, 1922. At that time, there was no partition of India and Pakistan. Hence Har Gobind Khorana was born in the village of Raipur, India (now located in Punjab, East Pakistan). He came from the only educated family in his village. His father, Ganpat Rai Khorana, used to be a clerk in the British administration. Har Gobind Khorana was the youngest among five siblings. The financial condition of his family was weak, but despite this, Har Gobind Khorana’s father raised his children very well. But sadly, when Har Gobind Khorana was 12 years old, his father passed away. In such a situation, Har Gobind’s elder brother took up the responsibility of teaching him further.
He did his early education at the local DAV High School. Har Govind Khorana obtained his MSc degree in 1945 from Panjab University. Har Gobind Khorana was very capable, so he was also given a scholarship from the Government of India. After that, he went to England for higher education. He also researched from the University of Liverpool in England. There he researched under the supervision of Professor Rajar JS Beer and earned his doctorate. After this, he once again engaged in research work with Professor V Prelog at the Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland. From there, he went to Cambridge University in 1951. There he began researching nucleic acids with Alexander Tad. At the Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland, he met Esther Elizabeth Sibler, whom he married in 1952.
He went to Canada in 1952 to research at the prestigious University of British Columbia. There, with the help of the university, his work started taking shape. There he got the freedom to do whatever he wanted to do. He started a research program on phosphate esters and nucleic acids. But in 1960, he went to America for enzyme research and settled there. He also got citizenship there. There he did remarkable work on the decoding of genes and protein synthesis. Along with his two companions, he elucidated the structure of the DNA molecule. Along with this, he also told how DNA synthesizes proteins. He also discovered that the position of nucleotides in DNA determines which amino acids will be formed. These amino acids make up proteins. These amino acids work to carry forward the functioning of information related to cells. The secret of genetics is hidden in these acids.
Har Gobind Khorana Nobel prize: His work laid the foundation of biotechnology, and he also received the Nobel Prize in 1968 for this work. In 1970 he was appointed professor of biology and chemistry at MIT. There he worked till his retirement in 2007. Dr. Har Gobind Khorana has received the Danny Hahnemann Award, Losker Federation Award, Lucia Grass Hari Wiitz Award, and the Nobel Prize. He has also been honored with Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. Apart from these honors, to honor him, the University of Wisconsin-Medicine, Indo-US Science and Technology, and The Government of India Started the Khorana Program in 2007.
