Struggle For Freedom
With the victory in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the foundation of the English nation was laid in India. The Massive Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 was the first freedom struggle of Indians against the British Raj. The rebellion was ruthlessly suppressed, but with this, the Company’s rule in India ended. The British government’s rule came directly over the areas under the Company. The Simon Commission of the British came to India to consider constitutional reforms. Then, the British rulers said that Indians could not make a constitution for themselves. In response to this challenge, a committee headed by Motilal Nehru prepared a draft constitution popularly known as the Nehru Report.
Under British rule, it was now the first outline of a constitution made by any Indian himself. Then, it got the support of all the parties. On December 31, 1929, the Congress under the chairmanship of Jawaharlal Nehru adopted the goal of Purna Swaraj. Since 1930, every year on January 26, the life of independence started being repeated. January 26 continued to be celebrated as Independence Day till the country became independent. The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly was held on December 9, 1946. From August 15, 1947, the Constituent Assembly became the fully sovereign Constituent Assembly of independent India.
After completing constitution of India
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the chairman, and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constitution. It was no small matter that the Constituent Assembly could make a constitution that would apply from one end to the other of this vast country and how many were successful in establishing unity among the diversities. Dr. Ambedkar, while speaking in the Vidhan Sabha on November 25, 1949, said insignificant words, ” I feel that no matter how good the Constitution may be. If the people entrusted with the task of running the Constitution turn out to be wrong, then indeed, the Constitution will also prove to be wrong. On the other hand, no matter how bad the Constitution is, the Constitution will prove suitable if good people are running it. ”
On November 26 (Constitution day) 1949, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in his concluding speech, warned the countrymen in memorable words and said that, Overall, the Constituent Assembly was successful in making a good constitution, and they believed that this Constitution would fulfill the need of the country. But if people come elected and are capable, of character, and honest, they will make even a faulty constitution the best. If they lack these qualities, then the Constitution cannot help the country.
