In a landmark decision, the Narendra Modi government on Saturday decided to implement the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme. Addressing a section of the media on Saturday afternoon, Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said, "The Government of India respects its defence forces. They display courage and bravery in difficult circumstances. The issue of OROP has been pending for over four decades and the Prime Minister has on many occasions reiterated this government's commitment to implement OROP." Parrikar added that the previous government had estimated that implementation of the scheme would cost Rs 500 crore, however the "reality is that OROP scheme would cost 8,000 crore to the exchequer. The Centre today termed as "very tense" the situation in Manipur where eight people were killed and 31 others injured following large scale arson and violence. The central government would rush additional paramilitary forces following a request of the state government to assist police in tackling the situation. "Situation in Manipur is very tense. Curfew has been imposed all around the troubled areas. If necessary, we will take more steps," Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told reporters here. Rijiju said so far eight people have lost their lives and many others were injured following the violence since yesterday. "We are monitoring the situation. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said during a press conference that Pakistan took 22 days to respond to India’s call for NSA talks and that if talks were to happen Pakistan should not involve any third party. “Talks with terror cannot happen, but talks on terror are desirable,” said Sushma Swaraj. “If Pakistan does not agree to India’s position, there will be no talks,” added Swaraj.
